The Renaissance Collection

All roads lead to Florence with Outsider Supply’s latest collection. The Renaissance marked the rediscovery of classical Greek and Roman philosophy, and a flowering of art inspired by those ancient civilizations.

We all know and love the Renaissance, one of history’s most iconic art movements. It’s incredible to know that this great movement was born out of a series of crises and social change in medieval Europe. The Great Famine of 1315-1317 began a period of tragedies that would collapse European population by 50%. The end of the Middle Ages was marked by the Black Death, wars, and political instability, and religious revolt. And out of this came The Renaissance.

This intellectual movement emerged from the effects of conflict and death during the 14th - 17th centuries as different cultures interacted and Ancient Greek and Roman texts were rediscovered. The first signs of this movement were in the writings of Dante and paintings of Giotto in late 13th century Florence, Italy. Many attribute the Medici family as the reason that Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance. A wealthy family that heavily patroned the arts and lived a fantastical lifestyle, including having giraffes that walked the Florence streets.

This period of rebirth would see many innovations in art, architecture, music, technology, agronomy, politics, math, philosophy, and other intellectual domaines – the development of linear perspective, the revival of the making of concrete and the study of humanism, the invention of the printing press, and the quick spreading of ideas are all achievements of this era.

All of this led to an age of emotional and intellectual development, as described by French historian Jules Michelet , “a modern understanding of humanity and its place in the world.” The iconic Renaissance movement. Traces of humanity during a transitional era, bringing medieval aspects of the Middle Ages ahead with a step into modernity.

At Outsider Supply, we, too, are looking back and rediscovering after we have been through our own era of change.
