National Arts Club X Outsider Supply: From Gilded Age to Today’s Creatives
Here at Outsider Supply we are proud to begin what we hope will be a lasting collaborative effort with the National Arts Club!
Founded in 1898 by Charles De Kay, a prominent literary and art critic for The New York Times, the NAC has long served as a sanctuary for artists and art lovers alike, fostering creativity and cultural dialogue across diverse artistic disciplines.
The National Arts Club has a rich history that dates back over 126 years. Initially established as a gathering place for artists, patrons, and enthusiasts, with founding members including notable figures such as Louis Comfort Tiffany and Charles Rollison Lamb.
The NAC quickly outgrew its original location on 34th Street, moving to the historic Samuel Tilden Mansion in 1906—a stunning example of Victorian architecture that continues to inspire awe today. This mansion, which was meticulously redesigned by famed architect Calvert Vaux, is not just a venue but a living testament to the club's commitment to preserving artistic heritage.
Throughout its history, the NAC has welcomed an impressive roster of distinguished artists and cultural icons. Members have included celebrated painters like Robert Henri and Frederic Remington, sculptors such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and literary giants including Mark Twain and Eleanor Roosevelt. Notably, the NAC has championed inclusivity from its inception, admitting women on equal terms with men—an extraordinary commitment at the time of its founding.
As a nonprofit organization dedicated to stimulating public interest in the arts, the NAC offers over 150 free programs annually, including exhibitions, performances, lectures, and readings. These initiatives attract more than 30,000 visitors each year, showcasing the club's role as a vital hub for artistic engagement in New York City. The NAC’s diverse programming reflects its dedication to all forms of artistic expression—encompassing visual arts, theater, literature, music, and more.
The collaboration with Outsider Supply marks an exciting chapter in the NAC's ongoing efforts to connect emerging artists with broader audiences. By fostering relationships between artists and cultural institutions, the NAC continues to bridge the gap between creativity and community engagement.
Join us as we continue our mission to inspire future generations through the transformative power of art.
