THE CONCEPT

A photograph of Robert Rauschenberg and Svarc Lauterstein, taken at Black Mountain College in 1949, captures Lauterstein wearing the "Centaur" costume designed by Rauschenberg for a performance choreographed by Merce Cunningham. The costume, made from mixed materials, was an innovative fusion of art, fashion, and movement, embodying Rauschenberg's early experiments with his "combine" technique.
