THE CONCEPT

At Black Mountain College, life was an organic mix of work, play, and artistic exploration. Nestled in the serene, rolling hills of North Carolina, the campus was more like a commune than a traditional school, where students and faculty lived side by side, blurring the lines between mentor and peer. The rustic, simple buildings, some converted from old farmhouses, served as both studios and living spaces, fostering an intimate, hands-on atmosphere. 

The college wasn’t just about making art, it was about living it. Students and faculty participated in farming, cultivating the land around them and sharing in the physical labor of growing food. The surrounding wilderness of the North Carolina mountains  became an extension of the college itself, with nature offering both inspiration and a backdrop for spontaneous performances and creative rituals. The lifestyle was communal, egalitarian, and often improvised.
