THE CONCEPT

With the Compliments of the Season, Design no. 3 by Henry Lyman Sayen (1875-1918) reflects his mature shift toward modernist abstraction, where festive imagery is rebuilt through structure, rhythm, and bold color.

Sayen was shaped by his studies in Paris with Henri Matisse. His designs moved away from Victorian sentimentality into a more distilled visual language informed by Cubist form and Fauvist intensity. He believed that modernist art was “the making of reality, not the representation of it".
