THE CONCEPT

Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s Armida Encounters the Sleeping Rinaldo, c. 1742-45,  is a theatrical spectacle of love, magic, and deception, bathed in ethereal light. Inspired by Jerusalem Delivered, the painting captures the enchantress Armida pausing over the slumbering knight Rinaldo, torn between vengeance and desire. Swirling drapery, luminous pastels, and weightless figures create an almost dreamlike atmosphere, where reality dissolves into fantasy. Tiepolo’s mastery of movement and light transforms the moment into an operatic drama, full of tension yet effortlessly graceful.

As one of the great masters of the Rococo, Tiepolo brought a sense of grandeur and dynamism to the style. His compositions, often filled with celestial light and airy brushwork, redefined illusionistic space, making frescoed ceilings seem to open into heavenly realms.
