THE CONCEPT
Oskar Schlemmer was an influential figure at The Bauhaus whose practice included painting, sculpture, design and choreography. His 1922 creation of Triadisches Ballett fuses all the aspects of his work perfectly. This full-length ballet, featuring painterly scenes and geometric costume design, was surely ahead of its time.
This garment features an elegant and playful sketch from Schlemmer’s planning of the piece that would eventually be brought to life, along with his titled note STELZENL ÄUFER, which is german for stilt dancer.
True to the questions being asked at the Bauhaus and during the early era of mass production, Schlemmer plays with the concept of the body being a machine-like object and the innate biological organicness of the human being.
Surrounded by a simple red frame in two layers - one of perfect geometry and the other hand drawn - and playfully finished with a naive typographic lettering of the French spelling of le ballet, is intended to juxtapose minimal shapes with spontaneity, energy, and the sometimes random nature of the creative process.
