THE CONCEPT
Man Ray, a multifaceted artist renowned for his prowess in painting, photography, and the creation of assemblage-objects, played a pivotal role in the inception of both Dada and Surrealism. His immersion in contemporary European art, witnessed at Alfred Stieglitz’s gallery 291 in New York following the influential Armory Show, catalyzed his artistic journey. Upon encountering Marcel Duchamp in 1915, their collaboration burgeoned, leading to Man Ray's pivotal involvement in New York Dada by 1921. Subsequently, he relocated to Paris, becoming an integral part of André Breton’s Surrealist circle.
Created in 1936, "Venus Restored" emerges from a plaster cast of the venerable Venus de Medici, infused with Man Ray's ingenuity by the addition of a simple length of rope. This readymade assemblage, presents a self-aware depiction of a divine female figure atop her pedestal.
